“Well,” he went on after a few moments of thought, “if I had, it would have been my second favourite.”
The adults in the room burst into great guffaws of warming laughter, which left Flo a little embarrassed again until she realised they were laughing with him and not at him.
“Why are they laughing, Mam?” he asked, his nose wrinkling in its usual puzzled way when he was unsure. “Is it because there’s no porridge?”
“It’s because you’re such a funny little boy,” she smiled, nodding at the other guests. “Egg and bacon and fried tomatoes it is, then. No beans, thank you very much.”

“What’s it to be, then, young ’un?” Granddad Jud asked Jack once breakfast had been dispatched and digested. “Does tha know, I fancy a walk on the sands, and a paddle. I don’t know what thy wants to do.”
“A paddle would be just the job, Granddad,” Jack replied. “But we’d better be careful not to traipse through any of that ‘funny’ sand on our way to the sea.”
“Funny sand?” Flo puzzled, not knowing where her strange little boy had heard that one. “I’ve not heard that one before.”
“Well,” Jack started, “it’s not really sand at all. It’s poo, you know.”
“Jack,” Flo said, shocked to hear him telling about something he’d never found the same fascination with as many others of his age. “That’s enough.”
“Sorry, Mam,” he said quietly but firmly. “I’ve no wish to offend you, but it does get pumped into the sea when it’s been made clean. Mr Tomlinson did a lesson on how we clean up our messes, and what we do with it when it’s been sorted. Sometimes it comes back with the tide and covers parts of the beaches. I think it’s clean by then, but I still don’t want to put my feet in it.”
“I’m rayt glad tha told me about that, our Jack,” Jud added. “And I were just going to have an ice cream, too.”
“I’d like one, Granddad,” Jack enthused, “and then I’d like a paddle, a donkey ride, and to watch Punch and Judy.”
“Couldn’t have chosen better missen,” Jud agreed. “Now where’s yon ice cream van?”
